The Complete Guide to Music Classes for Kids Under 7

The Complete Guide to Music Classes for Kids Under 7

Music classes can be a great way for kids to learn and grow, especially in early childhood! Cognitively, music helps ignite a child’s brainpower. When your child claps to a beat or hums along, they’re actually boosting their thinking and memory skills!

Every song they engage with helps fine-tune their problem-solving and reasoning abilities for the future. In addition to the cognitive benefits, getting kids involved in music classes with peers promotes social, emotional, and fine motor skills too.

Many kids do not start reading music until they’re 7 years old, but that doesn’t mean they can’t get involved in music classes and start learning the basics!

If you’re thinking about enrolling your young child in music lessons or classes at Bach to Rock, here are a few tips for getting the most out of your experience:

  1. Choose the right program.

Bach to Rock offers a variety of music classes for young children. You’ll want to choose the right class based on your mini music lover’s age. These group classes are geared toward kids under the age of 7.

  • Rock n Roll is a parent-child group class for kids between the ages of 1 and 3. These weekly classes include fun activities like sing-alongs, story time, and instrument exploration. Class duration ranges from 30 to 60 minutes.
  • Rock City is open to preschoolers of all skills and experience levels between the ages of 3 and 5. This class is perfect for young children who are starting their first music class. It’s also a great choice for preschoolers who have taken other music programs, like our Rock n Roll baby and toddler music classes. Class duration ranges from 30 to 60 minutes.
  • Kids n Keys is a perfect introduction to piano lessons for kids! This fun and interactive group class for ages 5-7 builds fundamental piano and keyboard skills. Small class sizes allow for plenty of one-on-one learning while allowing kids to have fun as they learn to play piano. It’s also a perfect way to help students develop the skills they’ll need for future music lessons.
  • Fun with Music gives kids 6-7 years old the chance to try playing instruments before starting music lessons. Over the course of 10 hands-on classes, students get to try keyboard, guitar, ukulele, drums, and singing. We recommend Fun with Music for any student whose unsure which instrument they want to learn.

Group classes in early childhood introduce basic music concepts and help to prepare kids for private music lessons, performing in the community, or joining a band or glee club. By starting young, kids can develop confidence in their lessons and with an instrument.

  1. Choose a time and location for you.

Convenience is important to ensure you’re able to commit to weekly classes. Consistency is important for both students and teachers. Ensure you choose a time that works well for your schedule, and you can attend the classes each week.

With a variety of class times and locations available, Bach to Rock provides flexible options to get your child started in music lessons.

  1. Make music a part of your everyday life.

Play music in the car, sing songs at bedtime, or even dance around the kitchen while cooking dinner. The more you immerse your child in music, the deeper their appreciation for it will grow. Introducing them to various genres, from classical to rock, broadens their horizons and may spark interest in instruments or styles they’ve never encountered. You may even be surprised to find they share a love for some of the same classic songs as you!

You can use daily activities as opportunities to explore rhythms and melodies. For example, turning chores into musical sessions, like creating a beat while sorting laundry or humming a tune during bath time, can make routine tasks exciting. Organize occasional family karaoke nights or set up a “home concert” where they can perform for you.

Parents can also invest in simple instruments like tambourines, maracas, or recorders to let kids experiment and express themselves musically at home in between classes. Remember, every time you engage with your child musically, you’re not only strengthening their bond with music but also creating cherished memories together.

  1. Attend a Demo Class or Event.

If you’re not quite sure if music classes are something your child will be interested in, many Bach to Rock locations offer free class demonstrations at local community centers, churches, or libraries. You might even find a local Bach to Rock band performing and your next community event, fair, or local park. Parents and kids can attend many Bach to Rock events to see what all the hype is about! Check out B2R’s event calendar for any upcoming classes or workshops.

By attending just one demonstration class to try it out, you can get a feel for how your child will do in the class before enrolling! Bringing a friend along can help make the class familiar and more fun. Stopping by an event and seeing other kids perform on stage can show your child what they can do if they stick with learning music!

  1. Praise your child’s efforts.

Let your child know how proud you are of them for trying new things! This will help them feel good about themselves and motivated to continue learning and exploring music. Children thrive on encouragement.

This affirmation tells them that their journey, with all its highs and lows, is valuable and worth celebrating. So, whether it’s their first attempt at a piano key, a tiny dance move, or a shy vocal rendition, let them know how proud you are. Your praise today will echo in their musical memories, fueling their enthusiasm and dedication for years to come.
